Improving Your Popularity With Link Building Strategies

After all the effort that you’ve spent on building a website, you want to know that you’ve done everything possible to maximise the ways to attract customers to your site.

That’s where link building can make the difference between good results and amazing results.

The popularity and quality of the links to and from your website – but particularly those to – will have a profound impact on where you rank in the search engine listings for your chosen competitive keywords. Choose the right kind and you’ll get a healthy boost in the rankings.

But what exactly is the right kind of links back to your website?

Many links from multiple domains

Search engines will rank your site according to the relevancy of the content to the keywords and phrases, so the more sites that link to yours the more apparent it becomes just how much others find your content important and useful. That’s why your back links shouldn’t be from just one or two sites. If they come from a website or other domain which has been active for a long time, even better as it is classed by search engines as much more credible.

Links to specific content (deep or ingrained links)

Many of your links will direct traffic to your homepage, however it’s worth bearing in mind that you have many pages of content that could be also linked to. A link to these, known as a deep or ingrained link, shows that you have important information throughout your site. After all, if you have spent a time and money designing and developing the pages on your site, it makes sense to use them to their maximum potential. Another useful feature of deep links is the ability to use your competitive keywords to increase your ranking by the search engines.

Love thy neighbour – local links

Many companies spend a lot of effort building links with websites around the world, but ignore the potential on their own doorstep. Your local community is a rich source of back links, and these are often easier to obtain than international ones or ones from experts.

Local businesses will often jump at the chance to exchange links with you – it’s a win-win situation as both of you will benefit from each other’s web traffic, but don’t forget that the businesses you link to and from must be relevant to your business. If you sell security systems a link to your local chip shop is unlikely to impress potential customers.

The links from local authorities, such as the Chamber of Commerce, are particularly well regarded, as are local government agencies, museums and libraries. Online directories can also be very useful too, but you are likely to have to pay a fee for this.

Respect the Authority – Authoritative Domain links

Search engines classed certain sites as more credible and knowledgeable than others, and if you are able to exchange links with them you’re almost guaranteed a boost in rankings. Any site that is considered an authority on a certain subject will usually have a great deal of well-researched and high quality information (probably with links to other sites too) that will be looked upon favourably by search engines. Look for domains with .gov, .ac.uk, .edu and .org among others.

Anchor text links

A very good and popular way to increase your rankings is to use anchor text links, which are simply words that you can hyperlink through to other pages which allow a reader to find other sources of information. Although this is probably the strongest tool available for increasing ranking it should be used in combination with the other techniques outlined above.
